Background and Summary:
|
School Board Policy JEG - Exclusions and Exemptions from School Attendance states that "The School Board shall excuse from attendance at school: (1) Any student who, together with his parents, by reason of bona fide religious training or belief, is conscientiously opposed to attendance at school."
On Thursday, July 31, 2024, a written family request was received for religious exemption from compulsory attendance for five children. The parents maintain that their religious beliefs are in conflict with the provisions of the compulsory attendance statute. State Code 22.1-254.B.1 states that a School Board shall excuse from attendance at school any pupil who, together with his parents, by reason of bona fide religious training, is conscientiously opposed to attendance at school.
